You can get a great view of this spectacular cascade from Rydal Grot, a small grotto that was built in 1668 for tourists.

Finished with a fantastic home-made cream tea sitting by the waterfalls in the gardens of the tea shop at Rydal Hall.. and dont forget to visit the GROT, with its summerhouse and waterfall. Lovely little cafe where you can sit outside by the banks of the river. The gardens are free to get.

Rydal Hall is a large detached house on the outskirts of the village of Rydal, Cumbria, in the English Lake District. It has an early nineteenth-century front facade, but includes some earlier fabric.. "The Grot" at Rydal Falls is described in William Wordsworth's early poem, "An Evening Walk", published in 1793. The poet moved to Rydal.

The main event for us was the Grot (or grotto), a viewing station built by Sir Daniel Fleming in 1688 to provide a place to sit and enjoy the spectacular view of Rydal Falls. You can certainly see why it is such a popular spot- the waterfall is breathtakingly beautiful and there are plenty of different compositions to be had.

Originally, Rydal was part of Westmorland in Cumbria and its name derives from Old Norse meaning the "valley where rye was grown". Rydal Water was also known as Routhemere. It was first mentioned in recorded history in 1240 and a manor home was assigned to Roger de Lancaster in 1270. Isabella Lancaster then married Thomas Fleming of Coniston.
